12 Christmas Gifts For the Gardener Or Composter on Your List

Most of us who garden and/or compost haven't even began thinking about the new season coming up in the Spring. Why, we just finished cleaning up our yards and garden areas from this season! And, unless you have a compost creating system such as one with a kitchen crock and one of those little back porch compost tumblers, your compost producing efforts may well slow down in the course of the colder months as well.

But the avid gardeners or composters on YOUR Christmas list are already planning for next season. They are counting the days until the new seed catalogs come out and the seedling plants are offered at the nurseries. They cannot wait for the ground to thaw, or change back from a soggy mess of mud to actual soil, so they can go outside and begin poking around. They want to get their hands back in the soil. They do not mind dirt under their fingernails and all over the back porch.

So bring joy to their hearts and a smile to their faces when they open their Christmas gifts and get the special gardening or compost generating items you picked out particularly for them.

Here are some great tips:

  • Garden clogs - these are seriously nice and you can slip in and out of them with ease
  • Thermometer to take the temperature of compost so they'll know if it is cooking or just sitting there
  • Claw fork compost turner - this is seriously handy if you have a wormery and require to aerate the organic compost material you put in the leading bin
  • Bucket of worms - make sure they in fact have a wormery - or like to fish!
  • A kitchen crock or pail, maybe one of the nice bamboo ones. These are so cute sitting on the kitchen counter and come with filters so they are odor free of charge
  • A book about any of the various composting producing methods - mushroom composting, a wormery, the Bokashi Method, compost tumblers, a pile and a pitchfork, or even a typical compost bin
  • An additional wormery just for their dog or cat poop. The resulting "castings" can be used in an ornamental garden, but not a food producing area
  • A new pitchfork for the die-hards who will constantly want to do it the old-fashioned way
  • A Bag of Bokashi refill if they are utilizing the Bokashi Method
  • A Composter Aerator Tool. This is handy for a compost bin or pile
  • A Gift certificate to their favorite gardening store - stick it inside of the book on compost making you also bought them
  • A Custom t-shirt - "I enjoy my Wormery" - or something like that!
If you have a person on your list who just moved into a new location and they now have room to garden and/or compost - and you feel they would like to compost - a very simple starter compost producing method, like Bokashi, or a Wormery, may possibly be enjoyable. You could also give them a book or two on the a number of forms of compost generating.

We would like to wish all of our gardener and composter pals a terrific Holiday season. Renee & Aziz
